Phantom Key: A Wondrous Item for 5e

The greatest of treasures is oft hide behind secret doors, but rare is the dungeoneer with the time to tap every wall and test every possible means of ingress. For those hurried adventurers the first phantom key was forged.

Phantom Key

Wondrous item, uncommon

A key for hidden doors, a phantom key is made from bronze with a dull cracked stone set into its head. The key itself does not fit any conventional lock. When a phantom key is held aloft as part of a Search action to find hidden doors the crack in the stone reveals itself to be an eyelid, which opens to expose a fleshy eye that looks around the room granting a +2 bonus to the Search action. Moreover, when a phantom key’s tip is pressed against a secret door as part of a Use an Object action the door opens even if a special action is normally requires to open it (e.g., pulling a false book from a bookcase, pressing a hidden stud, speaking a secret work, etc.). When used to open a secret door that is locked, barred, or otherwise prevented from opening by magical or mundane means the phantom key crumbles to dust immediately afterward.
