Fire Grenades: An Extinguishing Item for 5e
In the storied history of firefighting, between the advent of the bucket and the fire hose, there was the fire grenade. First recorded in ancient Rome, these ingenious glass bulbs full of water, salt, and less savory solutions, were common in homes, businesses, and government offices throughout the 1800s and well into the early 20th century. Once ubiquitous, fire grenades were forgotten following the implementation of the fire truck, the hydrant, and the pressurized chemical fire extinguisher. However, as those inventions are a long ways off in most fantasy campaign settings, it’s high time the fire grenade made an appearance in your campaign!
Fire Grenade
Type: Adventuring Gear Cost: 15 gp Weight: 1 lb
This sturdy glass bulb sealed with a cork and wax contains a mix of water and chemical agents expertly proportioned to smother flames. As an action, you can throw this object up to 20 feet, shattering it on impact. Make a ranged Attack against a burning creature, burning object, or the center of a fire covering an area no larger than 10 feet, treating the fire grenade as an improvised weapon. On a hit, all fires and open flames within 10 feet of the point of impact are extinguished. However, shards of broken glass spread across the 10 full area surrounding the point of impact. Treat this area as if it were covered in caltrops, but any creature wearing footwear thicker than socks automatically passes the Dexterity saving throw.
At the GM’s option a creature with water susceptibility or that is otherwise vulnerable to water takes 1d4 cold and acid damage from a fire grenade.
