Wind-up Toe Biter for 5e
Wind-up Toe biter
Wondrous item, uncommon
Wind-up toe biters are ingenious devices composed of sharp teeth and a clockwork jaw. As an action you can wind the biter and throw it into an open 5 foot space within 30 feet. For the next 1d6+1 rounds the teeth clatter about within the space, biting the toes, feet, and ankles of anyone who comes too near. Any creature that enters the toe biter’s space or an adjacent space - or begins its turn in one of these spaces - provokes an opportunity attack from the biter (Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage.). Poison can be applied to a wind-up toe biter’s teeth.
Variations of the toe biter exist. The rare “grave biter” is made from the teeth of ghouls and vampires and inflicts 2d6+2 necrotic damage. The rare “watchdog biter” is a DC 15 trap that can be wound and set, only animating once something comes within 5 feet of its location. Finally, the uncommon “tenacious biter” clamps down on the foot of the first creature it damaged, reducing the creature’s speed by 10 feet and inflicting its bite damage at the beginning of each of the creature’s turns until it winds down or is removed with a DC 13 Strength ability check.
