Solo, Dresden, Aliens, Chess Team, and More!
Last week I mentioned how winter finally hit us. Oddly enough I read online how we were having the coldest temperatures in over a thousand days. No big deal, the coldest I have seen it during the day was about -20 C, and it dropped to around -28 C during the night.
Cold enough for me to make sure I plug my car in, but by far not the coldest I have ever seen. I used to live in a city called Regina. It’s in the heart of the Plains of Saskatchewan, and I saw it get so cold there the temperature never climbed above -35 C for upwards of six weeks at a time in the winter.
And the worst was about -70 C but of course that was with the wind chill. Still, that’s incredibly cold!
Then again I also remember snow and snowbanks that would reach 3 or more meters in height when I was just a young lad growing up in Southern Saskatchewan, and I haven’t seen anything like that in many a decade.
We’re in for this weather for another week or so, and then it’ll start to warm up to close to freezing.
At least the roads are pretty good!
Yes I will be posting the links to last week’s New Mutant Monday creations, and of course I have two more ready to post tomorrow night. Thing is, I have no idea how I managed to accomplish it, but I screwed up with my math… Monday, the 26th is my final week for writing up creatures and when that day hits I’ll be at 100. Which means I am four behind.
So Monday the 26th I’ll be posting four creatures for New Mutant Monday series two, and with those four I will be finished series two, and be ready to begin series three the following week.
As you have come to expect, here are the two I wrote up for last week – Rhinark and the Oceanic Webber. Yes the Rhinark was suggested to me by Mark Margraf, who tagged me when he found the photo. The other creature, well one of the people reading the post placed the image in the comments, and thus this is why you are getting two chimeras for the week!
As has been the case the past couple of months I finished a pair of novels this week. First I read ‘Alien: Invasion’ By Tim Lebbon. This is the second in his ‘Rage War’ trilogy about a group of humans who had left the human sphere hundreds of years before. They are returning and have advanced alien technology on their side, as well as an ever-growing army of Xenomorphs, which are fully under their control.
Yes it’s stupid but I flat out REFUSE to use the name for the Predators which one of the numerous writers came up with for Dark Horse comics.
The HUNTERS have allied themselves with the humans, as they have likewise been targeted by the Rage.
Overall – action was pretty good, although I still find it all but impossible to give a damn about any of the characters! The story is pretty good however, and in a few months I will be finishing the trilogy.
Of course I do recommend it.
The second book I finished this week was called Instinct: A Chess Team novel by Jeremy Robinson. A virus which has the ability to alter the genetic code of humanity has been discovered and it has the potential to destroy the human race. Chess Team is sent to Vietnam in order to locate ground zero and hopefully someone who happens to be immune to this deadly plague in order to prevent a pandemic unlike anything the world has ever seen.
They encounter part of humanities ancient past while doing so, and a madman who wishes to see this ancient foe return to prominence. As such he wishes to prevent Chess Team from leaving.
Interesting story, good action, but I still have a hell of a hard time actually caring about the characters.
I really do need to continue with this series and will have to pick up the next book in the series.
And if that wasn’t enough, I finished two comic mini-series as well. Star Wars: Han Solo was the first one. The story revolves around Princess Leah sending Han and Chewbacca on a mission to gather up several agents, while participating in a stellar race.
It is suspected one of the agents has turned and as such no one really knows who is who, and they are going to be at the various stops along the path of the race.
I found the story to be quite intriguing and really enjoyed it! Over the past two years Marvel has produced quite a few mini-series based on the various iconic characters. Some have been pretty good, others… well hey – they tried.
Out of all of these series however – this one has to be my favorite.
The other was the Dresden Files mini-series Wild Card. It looks as if someone or something is trying to set the various supernatural powers at one another’s throats in Chicago. The White Court, Marcon’s people, even the Chicago PD.
It is up to Dresden to get to the bottom of this and do his damn best to prevent more innocent blood from being shed.
I love how the mini-series was resolved! God I want another Dresden novel… it’s been going on three years now!
This week the guys were back in full form with the latest D-Infinity podcast. They talked about Telling Fortunes this time around. There are times I wish I could join, but truth be told, the few times I have been on, I really didn't have all that much to add to the discussion and found I was essentially just a place holder. Not their fault, by any stretch of the imagination... I'm just not all that good on camera!
And here I was thinking of doing a podcast of my weekly blog. Glad I could never get my digital camera to work properly!
So last week I briefly touched upon a SJW comment about genderizing kids, as I thought it was retarded.
I even stated it was my view and that I took the time to write a disclaimer in which I could be wrong.
Read the line - I could be wrong!
Pretty simple and straight forward, right? No legalize, no foreign language, nothing… just plain English.
As it turns out at least one person who read my blog took offense to it and called me out on it, pointing out I was wrong and that essentially I should shut the fuck up.
Well – when someone clearly states that they could be wrong does not give a person the right to be a fucking asshole about it!
If I did not bother putting the statement in my little observation, then yeah – go ahead and be a dickhead.
When the statement is there and you still call me out and act like a douche, well you either did not bother to read it, or chose to ignore it.
Which makes you the asshole.
Another person called me out and essentially said I had no right to get pissed off about someone calling me out and saying I was wrong because my blog was public.
Guess what? Said person likewise either ignored my TWO PREVIOUS STATEMENTS in which I pointed out I said in my blog I could be wrong and because they either ignored it or didn’t read it was the reason I got pissed.
Christ on a crutch, people can be either stupid or just plain ignorant sometimes.
That’s the joy of the internet for you… brings out the worst in everyone.
And on that note, I’m done for the week. This time next Sunday I will have seen Rogue One and I can hardly wait! A few of my friends have already picked up their tickets for Thursday night, but I’ll be happy with seeing it on Friday afternoon.
I hope it rocks!
Stay happy and stay warm!
