Special Abilities

Hardened Survivor (Ex): The Scorpion is completely immune to poisons and radiation, and it is able to withstand extreme conditions, even utter vacuum. Whenever the beast must make a saving Fortitude saving throw when dealing with environmental conditions, it gains a +10.

Metamorph (Ex): Within a maximum of 60 minutes of the death of the host the rider was using, it will consume the corpse and grow into an identical version of the original host.

A recent addition to the Arachnid army is this tiny arachnid. They are the smallest of the species, each being less than 12 inches in length and weighing no more than 1 pound. They look like tiny termites with massive jaws, similar to that of the warrior sub-species.

They literally ride into combat on the carapaces of warriors or other types of ground-based arachnids, but never latch onto fliers, thinkers or other such specialized creatures. For the most part, they use the armor of the arachnid they are riding for protection. As long as the arachnid they are riding is not killed by area effect weapons (explosions, etc.) they will not be killed when the host is destroyed. If the host is killed by fire, explosions or other similar attacks, the rider is allowed to make a fortitude save at +12, thanks to their hardened survivor ability.

After the host has been killed, providing that the rider was not killed in the process, they will burrow through the armor of the dead host, or enter the body through an open wound, and begin to consume the creature from the inside out. This process takes 20+2d20 minutes to complete, and when they are finished, the newly grown warrior or other type of arachnid will burst from the carapace of the former host, ready to take its place.

If the enemy decides to search the dead host for some reason, the rider will do its best to hide from them, as they are exceedingly vulnerable to any form of attack, even a stomping foot at this time. They can live without hosts for as long as they are able to successfully evade or hide and will eventually find other dead arachnids, which they will infest and consume, growing to their full potential.
