The PMF series of handheld torches was originally created to be used in frigid locations, or where there was an excess of ice, which needed to be melted away in order to get at the minerals beneath. Typically they were found in the asteroid fields, where ice-encrusted asteroids were in abundance.

The device looks like an old fashioned BBQ lighter, but significantly larger. A long, straight nozzle attached to a hand-held pistol grip, on which a fuel tank was connected. The device, when fired, shoots a stream of superheated plasma. The stream has a width of 5 feet and, depending on the model, a range of anywhere from 15 feet to a maximum of 60 feet.  Anything caught in the area of effect is subject to the flame. So if several targets are in the line of fire, the attacker is allowed to hit roll against each one individually.

This weapon has a secondary firing mode, which allows the user to fire a condensed ball of hydrazine at a location within a 30 foot radius. The ball will remain stable for exactly one round, after which it will explode in a radius of 20 feet, inflicting the listed damage (based on the level of the gun).  Anything caught in the radius is allowed a Reflex save for half damage. Each shot consumes three charges of the fuel used in this weapon.  The fuel can be purchased at the rate of 5 credits per charge.  Different types of fuel can be used, and each has a different effect and price. See the additional chart provided.

In the hands of a mechanic, the device is far more effective than it would be otherwise. A mechanic will gain +2 to hit, and the DC save is increased by 1.
