Lost were at one point in their existence human. During the alien invasion, the weapons and biological components of their ships and other siege weapons and equipment had an unseen side effect of mutating the humans who happened to be in the area and were unable or unwilling to leave.

The former humans began to degenerate, their flesh becoming sallow and grey, the lips pulling back from the teeth, the hair fell out and they lost all ability to reason. Essentially they became living zombies, although they were not undead.

Only one desire remained, to gather in packs, and to hunt down, kill and devour any who were not like them. They still retain a very minimal intellect, and can use it to open doors, climb ladders, and other simple tasks that are lost to typical zombies.

When hunting, the Lost are attracted to any sound, in fact their auditory systems have become highly attuned, so that even the slightest sound can be detected, and they will close in on it, hoping to find food. Once prey has been located, the Lost will converge on it, often from all sides, to ensure that the prey cannot escape.

Unlike most alien derived combatants, the lost will attack anything living that they encounter. They will ignore constructs or anything that does not possess a biological component.
