Special Abilities

Hardened Survivor (Ex): The Burrower is completely immune to poisons and radiation, and it is able to withstand extreme conditions, even utter vacuum. Whenever the beast must make a saving Fortitude saving throw when dealing with environmental conditions, it gains a +10.

Swallow whole (Ex): The creature is able to potentially swallow whole any creature it bites which is at least one category size smaller. See page 156-157 of the Alien Archive for more information.

Trample (Ex): As a full-round action, the creature can move up to twice its speed and literally run over any opponents at least one size category smaller than itself. The Tank merely has to move over the opponents in its path. The creature does not need to make an attack roll; each creature whose space it moves through takes damage. A target of a trample can make a REF save (DC 15) for half damage. If it attempts the save, it can’t make an attack of opportunity against the trampling Tank due to the creature’s movement. The Tank can deal trample damage to a given target only once per round.

Although there are worker arachnids, who constantly build the hives, maintain them, and dig regular tunnels and corridors, the Arachnids have created a specialized worker. This creature looks like a massive worm, with thick, armored flesh and a maw filled with inward-pointed teeth. The creature does not appear to have eyes, but this is a misnomer. They are located around the mouth and are protected by tough flaps of armor, which cover the eyes during the creature’s burrowing.  When it burrows, the creature can sense movement on the surface, and often they will burrow towards the vibrations they sense and attack. On average the creatures is approximately 20 feet in length, and weigh around 5 thousand pounds.

As the creatures burrow, the materials they rend and grind in their mouths is ejected behind them, crushed to fine powder as the material passes through the body. Anything swallowed by the creatures often suffer the same fate – flesh, equipment, armor, weapons, broken down into their component parts and ejected.

When the creatures are not burrowing tunnels, they are often used to lead groups of other arachnids, burrowing deep beneath the surface until they reach their target area, and then they burst through the surface, crushing anything in their path and opening the way for the arachnids following them to attack.

Unlike the worker arachnids, these creatures are not cowards – they will wade into combat alongside other arachnids, using their bulk and their ability to swallow targets to their full advantage.
