More Goo Pools

Of all the things I have created for Mutant Future, my favorite that isn’t biology related is the goo pool. They are my version of the Bag of Beans or Wand of Wonder, obviously with a science fantasy twist. You can read up on the original examples here: http://d-infinity.net/blog/derek-holland/goo-pools-mutant-future

5’ wide X 8’ deep green sludge with what appear to be red worms crawling over its surface and has an odor of ozone. A bather’s eyes fall out and regrow after 1d4 hours. The lost eyes roll around on the floor, walls and ceiling (if any) in random directions until destroyed or 2d4 days later when they decay to the point where they can’t roll. The bather gains the Option Emissions (Bright Eyes) mutation when their eyes grow back.

2’ wide X 1’ deep black tar with small blue rings floating on top and an odor of skunk. This pool emits temporal pulses that are keyed to keratin. Pulses are every 1d12 round and those within 50’ of the pool have their hair and nails double in mass every time they are exposed. Eventually this results in a loss of DEX as the character is weighted down, but that takes several pulses (at least six) and most will be able to escape long before that happens.

6’ wide X 2’ wide puce oil with tiny green leaf-lie structures that grow and collapse every few seconds. This pool draws rodents and those that fail their save versus poison dive in. They are fused into living clothing large enough for 12’ tall humanoids. The pool keeps animals in stasis until it has enough to create another article, which is then ejected and allowed to escape.

3’ wide X 1’ deep gin clear with the odor of burnt toast. Crystal spheres grow on the bottom and then are forcefully ejected onto the ground nearby in large numbers (dozens at the same time). Anyone within 10’ of the pool when this happens must save versus energy attacks or take 1d4 points of damage. When these crystals are in flesh contact with a creature, they record its first sentence as text in a random Ancient language. They can not be erased or reused.

12’ wide X 8’ deep white paste with brown letters, numbers and symbols. The writing provides formulae recipes and artifact schematics. With a successful technology roll, a character will pick up on flaws and how to correct them. If used as is, the resulting chemicals or artifacts are hazardous to the use’s health.

6’ wide X 18’ deep red tar with yellow sparks. If a creature bathes and has one or more corroded objects with them, the objects are repaired and are as good as new. Every 1d6+2 days there after the objects return to their corroded condition and only the blood of the bather can repair them, to the tune of 1d4 points of damage per object (more for very large objects).

25’ wide X 4’ deep translucent blue fluid with silver lightning passing through it every 1d6 rounds. Bathers are shrunk to 1d6 inches tall permanently. This does not include their gear. Locals who know of the pool have the Density Alteration (Self) mutation and use it to trick rubes into shrinking themselves by telling the tale of a microcity full of artifacts to scavenge and horrendous monsters to slay.

12’ wide X 2’ deep dark blue tar with yellow spots and the odor of rotting fish. This pool emits calcium as a gas that turns into “fangs” when it comes into contact with the floor and ceiling. The ground within 20’ is effectively covered in caltrops and those on the ceiling will fall with any loud sound. Those in the rain of fangs take 1d12 points of damage, save versus energy attacks for half damage.

2’ wide X 2’ deep emerald with orange bubbles. This pool is found at the center of an alien structure- building, ship, glade, etc.- and keeps reality stable. If the pool is disrupted in any way, the structure returns to its universe or planet within 1d20 minutes.

3’ wide X 6’ deep black paste with silver spirals. Above the pool is a hologram of a complex molecule. Those with some form of telekinesis can manipulate the hologram, forming whatever molecules they desire. One minute after the hologram is left alone, the pool produces 3d8 X 4 pounds of that substance once per day until the little stop button on the hologram is telekinetically pressed.

4’ wide X 15’ deep sepia liquid that belches red and yellow smoke rings. Bathers who dive in find themselves in the Ancient world as ghostly figures unable to touch or communicate with those they see. They will spend 1d4 hours in one of the cities of the Ancients and then return to the pool. An individual can use the pool only once in their lives.

6’ wide X 3’ deep purple sand that absorbs wisps of darkness drawn from nearby shadows. All glass objects brought within 30’ of the pool shatter and the fragments are absorbed. If the glass was more than 10 pounds, the pool emits a pulse of energy that turns all iron and steel within 30’ into neovulanium (Mutant Future p. 128), quadrupling its strength and making it immune to rust and most corrosion attacks.
