d-Infinity Asks: How did Handimonsters come about?

First and foremost, it’s all about our team. We’re a bit of a rag-tag band of creators who got together to make some real passion projects. We want to make things that are really super high quality, but have the personal touch of an indie.

Something we’re very good at is monsters. We were commissioned by Onyx Path Publishing to make their Creature Collection 5e for the Scarred Lands setting, and we’re really pleased with how that came out, and we all really enjoyed the process. We have this real depth of experience with 5e monster-making, and with providing some awesome monster art. Jacob our lead designer, and Scott our lead artist are really brilliant at this stuff.

As the leader of the gang, I’ve really enjoyed working with my patrons at www.jonhodgsonmaps.com and wanted to offer something from our team. Looking around, I couldn’t seen many people (well, nobody really) doing what Handimonsters offers - a really high quality, pro-quality if you will, monster subscription service. Which in turn could really complement the monthly battle maps.

Having exciting new foes to test your players, with exclusive, direct, GM-only access, seemed like a really neat thing to offer, and with the people in place to make it AMAZING, we thought we should give it a go.

We’ve really focused on doing one thing well with Handimonsters - each monster of course has a stat block and description. But we also do top down VTT tokens, little portrait tokens, an art card for the GM to show players, and even printable paper minis. It’s the complete one-stop shop, and that’s based around what we would want for our own games.

I think with our gamer hats on, we can all make our own new adversaries. But who has the time, and real breadth of imagination to consistently pump out exciting, different, surprising monsters. And that’s where Handimonsters is coming from. We know RPGs aren’t all about combat, but having something new to fight, and having creative monsters that aren’t just bags of hit points, really spices things up!
