Ragnarok: Age of Wolves - Magic Weapons!

Viking_sword_pommel_2.jpg

Magic weapons abound in Norse legend and literature, from the weapons of the gods like Mjolnir and Gungnir to those of mortal heroes. Sigmund, and Sigurd after him, wielded Gram a gold-hilted wonder that slew the dragon Fafnir. The Skjoldung kings of Denmark had the blade Skofnung. Too far-famed to stay with Hrolf Kraki in his barrow, it was looted by Skeggi, an Icelandic viking centuries later. Legbiter was the name of a sword ownd by Magnus III of Norway.

Some magic weapons held a curse. Baneful Tyrving never dulled nor rusted, and could cut iron and stone as a weavers shears cut cloth. Yet it was as deadly to its wielder as to his foes, cutting its way through generations of wielders.

Here are a few magic weapons in Ragnarok Age of Wolves terms. Some of these are available as plunder in Ragnarok: Into the Barrowlands.

As can be seen in Norse legend, no magic weapon is a nameless thing. It has a name and a history, often a destiny as storied as any hero. This is how it should be. magic weapons should never JUST be a bonus to hit and damage.

Having said that, we have made a "generic" magic sword as treasure in Ragnarok: Into the Barrowlands with it in mind for the Warband that acquires such a marvel to invent their own history and name for it. Was it the legendary blade of a fallen hero of yore, whose draug had to be placated or slain in order that it be claimed? Or did it belong to a dead relative whose spirit surrenders it willingly? Did it rest in a dragon's hoard, waiting for a daring hero or cunning thief? Was it, like the sword Beowulf found in the sunken lair of Grendel's Mother, "aeld entas geworc" (Anglo-Saxon for: Old Giants Work), its name lost to the ages?

Ash: Spear of the Valkyrie: This gilded spear trembles in the hand, eager for blood.

Ash has the attributes of a normal spear, but returns to the hand when thrown, ready for the next Melee Phase.
