d10 Material Components

Red_Amber.jpg

A few months back we published a table of strange elements, rare substances varying in value and usefulness, from ignoble fool's silver to the dangerous but life-preserving red amber. Now we turn our attention to a different kind of element. What follows is a table of material components that can increase the potency of various spells, along with where these components can be found and how much a single use costs. Unless otherwise noted, the components are consumed in the casting of any spell they enhance. You can roll on the table below to generate special additions to an NPC spellcaster's component pouch, stock up an alchemist's workshop, or  flesh out a treasure hoard.

1d10

1. Dreamsand (20gp) - These tiny prismatic crystals are found only in the vicinity of powerful dreamers and is often left behind as residue when portals to the realm of dreams close. When used as an additional material component when casting divination magic or magic involving dreams, the caster's lever is considered one level higher.

2. Troll Bile (50gp) - This thick, greenish fluid is distilled from the livers of trolls. When used as an additional material component when casting healing magic, the dice rolled to determine the amount of hit point or ability damage increases by one (e.g. d6s become d8s, d8s become d10s, etc.). 1d6 vials of troll bile can be distilled from a typical adult troll's liver.

3. Angel Down (45gp) - These soft, silver-white feathers feel smooth as silk and weigh nothing. Literally the feathers of angels and similar celestial beings, when used as an additional material component when casting any non-evil or non-infernal spell, the spell is considered good, lawful, and divine for the purpose of overcoming spell resistance and similar abilities based on alignment. Additionally, any creature summoned with the aid of angel down gains the benefits of the celestial simple template.

4. Grave Ash (150gp) - This midnight black ash is made from the remains of vampires, lichs, and other powerful undead who met their end by fire or sunlight. When used as an additional material component when casting spells that animate or create undead, the undead animated/created does not count against the HD limit of undead the necromancer can control. A typical powerful undead's remains can produce 1d4 uses of grave ash.

5. Dragon Tongue (100gp) - This wad of desiccated flesh is made from the mummified tongue of an adult dragon. When used as an additional material component when casting spells of the same element type as the dragon's breath weapon, the caster's level is considered to be one higher, This benefit also applies to spells that the dragon knew in life.

6. Grove Snuff (75gp) - This fine brown powder is made from the horns of satyrs, fauns, and similar fey creatures. When used as an additional material component by bards, the duration of the spell with a duration other than permanent or instant increases by one. Unlike most material components, the bard must literally consume grove snuff up their nose. A single satyr horn can produce 1d4 uses of grove snuff.

7. Lifesap (125gp) - This bright amber fluid is made from the sap-like blood of treants. When used as an additional material component when casting spells related to plants or wood, the spell's slot is not expended. An adult treant can produce a number of uses of lifesap equal to its hit dice.

8. Wilder's Woad (75gp) - This blue paste resembles the body paint favored by some barbarians. In truth, it is made from woad salvaged from the bodies of slain warriors. When used as an additional component for spells related to anger or fear, the duration of the effected spell doubles. The woad of a slain warrior can produce 1d2 uses of wilder's woad.

9. Earthsalts (50gp) - These ruddy crystals are found only in the elemental plain of earth and as a residue where portals to the elemental plane of earth once stood. When used as an additional material component when casting spells that summon elementals and other beings from the plane of earth, the summoned creature gains damage resistance 5/-, which stacks with any damage resistance it may already possess, and the duration of the summoning increases by 50%.

10. True Rust (100gp) - This greenish-red powder is made from residue scrapped off of corroded magic items. When used as an additional material component when casting transmutation spells, the caster can double of halve the size of the transmuted substance/creature in addition to any size chance caused by the spell.
