All members of the hive live to breed and to protect the queen. However, she does have special drones, known as Praetorian guards that never leave the hive to hunt, and only stay near the queen in order to protect her from any would be attackers that enter the hive. She will always have 4-8 of these special drones with her, depending on the size of her hive and any losses that might have occurred.

These Praetorian guards are created when the queen feeds a special type of ‘royal jelly’ to regular drones. The drones then go into a brief state of hibernation where they undergo another metamorphosis, becoming larger, stronger and faster, more deadly than they were before.

This change requires 24 hours to complete.

There are unlikely occasions though when something ends up killing the queen. Whenever this happens one of the Praetorian guards (or if they have all been destroyed, one of the drones) will end up undergoing yet another metamorphosis, which takes at least 1 week to complete and once it has ended, a new queen emerges from the transformation and begins to lay eggs.

Long live the queen.
