Special Abilities

Consume (Ex): As a standard action, the Gatekeeper can open its shell and reach out with up to 4 ethereal tentacles. Using the creature’s melee attack, it can strike up to four times in a single round. Each tentacle will inflict the standard damage listed under the melee attack, but the target must also make a Fort save (DC 25). If the target fails, the will suffer 1d6 points of temporary Constitution damage. For each point of Constitution damage the target suffers, the Gatekeeper will heal 10 points of damage (if it has sustained any). The Gatekeeper can use this ability only twice per day.

Gateway (Su): As a full round action, the Gatekeeper can cause rift of psionic energy to appear anywhere in its line of sight (up to 500 feet). This appears to be a black, swirling cloud of energy, and has a radius of 30 feet. Anything caught in the radius will suffer 8d10+16 points of psionic damage and suffers a temporary loss of 3d4 points of wisdom, unless a Will save (DC 25) is made. If it succeeds, the target suffers half damage, and there is no wisdom loss. The Gatekeeper can use this once every 24 hours.

Melee Vulnerability (Ex): Whenever the Gatekeeper wishes to use its tentacles or Gateway ability; it must spend a move action to open its shell. When the shell is open, any enemy attacking directly from the front will find that the Gatekeepers EAC and KAC are at a -4, and its DR is likewise reduced to 10. It still retains the same EAC and KAC from the sides and the rear.  It is also a movement action for the Gatekeeper to close its shell.

Raise the Dead (Su): Any creature killed by the consume attack will automatically be reanimated on the next round. The corpse has half of its original hit points, and retains the same AC (without Dexterity bonus, if any). It also can use any weapons it was capable of using in life, but suffers a -2 to hit. Furthermore, it is in fact a zombie, and is staggered. The animated corpse will remain active for 3 minutes, or until either it, or the Gatekeeper animating it, is destroyed. The Gatekeeper can only raise and control up to 8 corpses at a time.

Self-Destruct (Ex): When the Gatekeeper reaches zero hit-points, it will automatically explode. This has a blast radius of 30 ft., and inflicts 6d12+16 Piercing damage. A Ref save (DC 25) for half damage

Telepathy (Su): All Gatekeepers are capable of telepathy. They can use this with one another. If they attempt to use this on another race, or an unwilling subject, the target is allowed a Will save (DC 25) to refuse the mental link.

Trample (Ex): As a full-round action, the Gatekeeper can move up to twice its speed and literally run over any opponents at least one size category smaller than itself. The creature merely has to move over the opponents in its path. The Gatekeeper does not need to make an attack roll; each creature whose space it moves through takes damage. A target of a trample can make a REF save (DC 25) for half damage. If it attempts the save, it can’t make an attack of opportunity against the trampling Gatekeeper due to the creature’s movement. The creature can deal trample damage to a given target only once per round.

Many believe that the Gatekeeper is a robotic unit, due to the exterior appearance of the creature. It is actually an amalgamation of biological matter and technology. The exterior is a huge round sphere with a large red ‘eye’. The creature moves through the air, although it never raises more than 10 feet from the ground.

It typically shoots a powerful beam of Plasma energy (range increments of 75 ft.) at targets, although if it is close enough to engage in melee attacks, it will open the shell to expose the biological components. When the ‘shell’ is open it is vulnerable to attacks from the front.

Those who have witnessed the shell opening find it difficult to describe the interior, other than a writhing mass of sickly-grey flesh that lashes out with numerous tentacles. The creature can use the tentacles to attack targets within range, and if the creature desires, it can use the tentacles to literally drain the very life-essence from any organic or creature with organic components (such as androids) in order to heal itself.

As horrifying as this particular attack is, if any creature is killed by the tentacle attack, it will raise the next round as a undead terror. The life-span of the undead creature is very limited, but it is under full control of the Gatekeeper and will act upon the aberrations will.

These particular creatures are rare, and are considered to be the top of the combat chain employed by the alien invaders. They are more powerful than the Ethereal, but they will always obey any commands issued by their alien masters.

Fully capable of communication, the creatures rely on telepathy to communicate with other alien allies, or to simply put the fear of their alien masters into the minds of any combatants they encounter.
