'Mazirian the Magician' (Jack Vance d20)

Michael O. Varhola

In the short story "Mazirian the Magician," the somewhat sinister title character is frustrated both by a beautiful woman who remains just outside his reach and immune to his spellcasting abilities and by his inability to imbue intelligence into an artificial being of his creation. Of all the many things in this story I could have adapted to game terms, the concept of Live Boots seemed most fun and appropriate to me.

Live Boots
Footwear of this sort has been magically brought to life and can allow its wearer to move even at great speed for extended periods of time ( http://www.d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm).

Such boots can allow a character to Hustle, moving up to twice their normal movement rate, for an hour, without becoming tired. After that, the boots must make a saving throw of DC 10 + 1 per hour  and, failing it, become flaccid and die; base modifier for this save is +0.

Live Boots  can also allow a character to Run, moving at three or four times normal speed depending on their encumbrance, for up to two minutes. For each minute after that, the boots must make a saving throw of DC 10 + 1 per minute and, failing it, die; base modifier for this save is +0.

Moderate transmutation; CL 5th; Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor,  Animate Objec ts; Price 2,000 gp; Weight 2 lbs.
